The “Cannot Add Draft” message in Vectric software usually indicates a problem applying a draft angle to a 3D model component, not an issue with adding a drawing or draft file. This error most often points to invalid or problematic 3D geometry.
What This Message Means
Vectric is unable to apply a consistent draft (tapered edge) to the selected 3D component due to one or more of the following:
- Geometry issues, such as:
- Overlapping or self-intersecting meshes
- Non-manifold geometry (edges shared by more than two faces)
- Empty, incomplete, or corrupt 3D models
- Visibility conflicts: The Add Draft tool applies to all visible 3D components. If multiple components are visible, or the intended model is hidden, the operation may fail.
- Import problems: Recently imported STL or OBJ files may have scaling, orientation, or mesh errors that prevent drafting.
- Software limitation or bug: In rare cases, the issue may be version-specific and resolved by updating Vectric.
How to Resolve the Issue
- Check component visibility
Ensure only the intended 3D component is visible in the Component Tree. - Validate source vectors
If the model was created from vectors, run the Vector Validator to identify and fix errors. - Simplify the model
Reduce model complexity in the source software or within Vectric before applying a draft. - Re-import the 3D file
Import the model again, confirming correct scale and orientation.
