Vectric Error: “Cannot Slice Component”

In Vectric software (VCarve or Aspire), this error occurs when the software can’t divide a 3D model into stacked layers. Common causes include selection issues, incompatible model types, or setup conflicts such as excessive slices or extreme Z-heights.

Common Causes

  • Multiple Selections: Only one 3D composite model can be sliced at a time.
  • Invalid Model Type: The selected item must be a true 3D composite, not a 2D vector or unsupported format.
  • Toolpath Conflicts: Models with existing conflicting toolpaths or already part of another sliced stack can’t be sliced again.
  • Setup Issues: Slice parameters, Z-height, or number of slices may exceed machine limits.

How to Fix

  1. Check Selection: Select only the target 3D model.
  2. Verify Model Type: Confirm it is a valid 3D composite in 3D view.
  3. Isolate the Model: Move it to a separate layer or group if needed.
  4. Check Parameters: Ensure slice thickness, number of slices, and Z-depths are reasonable.
  5. Re-import or Recreate: If problems persist, re-import or rebuild the model.

Note: The Slice Model feature cuts tall 3D parts into thinner layers that fit your machine’s Z-axis, which are then glued together to form the complete object. This error prevents that process.
